Quadra Island Residents Affirm Support for Tourism in New Provincial Report
Discovery Islands Chamber of Commerce commits to community-first tourism development
Quadra Island, BC — A new report from Destination British Columbia has found that Quadra Island residents recognize and value the positive role tourism plays in their community, with strong levels of support across key areas such as economic benefit, cultural enrichment, and quality of life.
The Resident Perceptions of Tourism Snapshot Series 2024–25 reveals that:
- 70.2% of Quadra Island residents agree that visitors make a valuable contribution to the local economy.
- 55.6% believe tourism contributes positively to their overall quality of life.
- Tourism’s social and cultural impact received a score of 3.31 out of 5, while Indigenous tourism experienceswere rated the highest among impact areas at 4.02.
“We are grateful to the 238 residents who took the time to respond to the survey. These findings reflect a thoughtful and balanced view of tourism among Quadra Island residents,” said Carol Perry, Treasurer for the Discovery Islands Chamber of Commerce. “Our community sees the value tourism brings, while also expressing clear expectations for sustainable growth and cultural respect.”
The report also highlights that residents are generally comfortable with current tourism levels in the spring and fall and show interest in seeing more balanced year-round visitation. Segmentation analysis shows that nearly one quarter of respondents categorized as Tourism Ambassadors or Tourism Supporters—those with consistently positive views across multiple tourism impact areas.
Chamber of Commerce Responds with Commitment to Community
In response to the report, the Discovery Islands Chamber of Commerce is reaffirming its dedication to responsible and inclusive tourism planning that reflects resident priorities.
The Chamber commits to:
- Engaging residents in decision-making and keeping community sentiment at the forefront of tourism strategies.
- Promoting sustainable practices that respect environmental limits and reduce seasonal strain.
- Championing local and Indigenous tourism operators to ensure economic benefits are felt locally.
- Educating visitors to respect Quadra Island’s natural beauty, community values, and cultural heritage.
“Our path forward is one that listens to our residents and works collaboratively to protect what makes Quadra Island unique,” Carol Perry added. “Tourism can and should support—not strain—the fabric of our island community.”
