Discovery Islands Chamber of Commerce to Host Community Introduction to AI

The Discovery Islands Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce Introduction to AI: A Practical, Hands-On Learning Session, taking place Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the Quadra Island Recreation Centre.

Presented by Dr. Farhad Moghimehfar, this introductory session will explore what AI is, how it is being used, and where it may—or may not—have a useful role in our workplaces, businesses, organizations, and everyday lives.

An Introduction, Not an AI Adoption Workshop, to Understand the Bigger Picture

No previous AI experience is required. Participants will explore:

  • AI basics and practical applications
    • Effective prompting
    • AI for work, business, organizations, and everyday life
    • Opportunities and potential benefits
    • Privacy, misinformation, copyright, environmental impacts, and responsible use
    • Practical examples and hands-on activities

The Chamber recognizes that AI raises important questions beyond technology and productivity, including its environmental footprint and broader social implications. The goal of this session is not to promote AI adoption, but to help our community understand the technology and make informed choices about when—and when not—to use it.

“Understanding AI doesn’t mean we have to embrace every application of it,” said Carol Ann Terreberry, President of the Discovery Islands Chamber of Commerce. “Our community has strong values around environmental stewardship and community wellbeing. We want to create an opportunity to learn, ask questions, challenge assumptions, and thoughtfully consider what role, if any, AI should play in our businesses, organizations, and community.”

Registration is limited to the first 40 participants. A short registration process will help tailor the session to participants’ experience and interests. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop for the hands-on activities.

The session is part of the Chamber’s Capacity Building Initiative, investing in skills, leadership, and resilience across our island communities, with funding provided through the Province of British Columbia’s Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP).
